In April of 2007, Tanna Frederick and Dick Schinnow launched the first Iowa Independent Film festival in Music Man Square in Mason City. Frederick had conceived the idea with independent film maker Henry Jaglom who had just directed her in Hollywood Dreams, and the two of them convinced Schinnow that a film festival should be established in North Iowa.

The festival began by establishing a relationship with the Mason City Foundation in which it could operate under its non-profit status. The Foundation exists to nurture the musical and architectural arts in Mason City, and it manages Music Man Square, the 12 million dollar complex dedicated to the life and accomplishments of native son Meredith Willson. The festival was held there the first two years.

During the winter of 2008 the festival board decided to change the IIFF’s location to nearby Clear Lake and the time from April until mid July in the hope of increasing attendance. However, the festival continues to enjoy the support of the Foundation and maintains its office in Music Man Square.

Beginning with that first year Tanna Frederick has brought a number of actors, writers and directors from Los Angeles to the festival, including Karen Black, David Proval, Ron Vignone, and Andre Gregory. In 2009 she will bring a second film to premiere…Irene In Time…and also actor Eric Roberts and Director Randal Kleiser. These visits by prominent members of the film community have helped to publicize the festival and make it unique for Iowa.
